The Inspirational Journey of Sundaram
Building a Legacy in Stationery and Education
The story of Sundaram reflects the growth of one of India’s leading stationery and paper brands. What began as a small initiative has grown into a globally recognized enterprise. Guided by the belief that “Education is the strength of our nation,” Sundaram has consistently worked to improve the learning experience for students while delivering quality stationery products.
The Beginning of Sundaram Multi Pap Ltd
With the vision of improving students’ lives, Amrutbhai P. Shah and Shantilal P. Shah founded Sundaram Multi Pap Ltd on March 13, 1995. The company received its Certificate of Commencement of Business on April 10, 1995 and established its headquarters in Mumbai.
At the time of incorporation, Sundaram acquired Starline Industries, a partnership firm that manufactured exercise notebooks, account books, and other paper stationery products. This acquisition included its business operations, assets, and liabilities.
On February 23, 1996, the company launched its first public issue of 1.8 million equity shares with a face value of ₹10 each. Soon after, its shares were listed on the Pune and Ahmedabad Stock Exchanges.
Advancing Through Technology
Sundaram focused on continuous technological growth from its early years.
The company started with a production capacity of 5 tons per day in 1995. In 1998, it increased capacity to 20 tons per day by installing two German-made machines. Another expansion in 2001 raised production to 50 tons per day, followed by an increase to 60 tons per day in 2003.
In 2009, Sundaram entered the eco-friendly paper segment by launching “Mr Green” copier paper with the slogan “Go Green With Mr Green.” This initiative reflected the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Driving Educational Innovation
In 2009, Sundaram established its wholly owned subsidiary, Sundaram Edusys Pvt Ltd, to develop digital educational content.
The company introduced E-Class, an innovative learning platform for students in Grades 8, 9, and 10 under the Maharashtra SSC Board. It covered every subject except Marathi and English and quickly gained acceptance among schools, coaching institutes, and students.
During 2009–10, Sundaram doubled its manufacturing strength by expanding the Palghar facility to 120 tons per day. At the same time, the company developed educational content for students from Grades 1 to 7 in both Marathi and English. It also began creating learning material for SSC Boards in other states.
Expansion and Modern Manufacturing
Sundaram achieved another milestone when its shares were listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on March 12, 2010, and on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on June 2, 2010.
During 2010–11, the company acquired additional land in Palghar and built a modern manufacturing plant equipped with fully automatic exercise notebook production lines. It later added more automated lines, transforming the facility into one of Asia’s largest paper stationery manufacturing plants.
Strengthening Growth
In 2012, Sundaram renovated its existing Palghar units and expanded its Back to School stationery operations.
The company also upgraded its Nagpur paper mill by installing modern machinery for commercial stationery production.
Building on the success of E-Class, Sundaram expanded the platform in 2011 to cover Grades 1 through 10 for English, Marathi, and Semi-English medium schools across Maharashtra. The overwhelming response from schools, coaching institutes, and students encouraged this expansion.
Establishing E-Class Education System Ltd
On December 15, 2011, Sundaram renamed its subsidiary from Sundaram Edusys Pvt Ltd to E-Class Education System Pvt Ltd. The company later converted it into a public limited company, becoming E-Class Education System Ltd on December 28, 2011.
Earlier that year, the company launched the E-Class Tablet, a digital learning device containing complete syllabus-based educational videos. Interactive animations, visuals, and audio lessons made learning more engaging and accessible for students.
